Port of Seattle, Seattle Art Institute, and Fashion Show
Forty IGNITE students from Marysville Mountain View High school and five chaperones loaded the bus from Marysville at 11:00am for our trip to the Port of Seattle and the Seattle Art Institute.
We unloaded our bus at Pier 69 and formed four groups with our chaperones. We entered in the beautiful Seattle headquarters for the Port of Seattle. The students were able to see a fantastic PowerPoint presentation in the Port of Seattle board room where the Port of Seattle Commissions’ meetings are held. Our Port of Seattle presenter, Diana Parker, was able to connect with students about jobs available through the port, explain in detail how import and export businesses affect our state, and our new Seattle cruise ship business was set up. The girls interviewed the front receptionist on how she liked working at the port. This was engaging for our students because she was able to get the job soon after high school. She also uses Photoshop to make flyers for the Port of Seattle. This was something that the our students know how to do!
We then walked up the hill a block to the entrance of the Seattle Art Institute. We were able to view a photography showing on China while waiting for our tour guides. Once our tour guides came, we entered a classroom to learn about program offerings and financial aid opportunities available at The Seattle Art Institute. We then had a world wind tour of the campus. The campus covered two city blocks and many floors. The library has a full view of Puget Sound and the Port of Seattle. Students were able to peak into classrooms to see Culinary Art students cooking and the clothing designers sewing. The hallways were lined with examples of student work from various programs such as animation classes, graphic arts, photography, fashion design artwork, etc. The institute even has their own film and recording studios.
IGNITE then departed to the Pike Place market for a 45 minute shopping break and then went to the waterfront for dinner at McDonalds or Ivars. We then continued our hike past Safeco Field to the Showbox SODO for the Seattle Art Institute student led Fashion Show. Next time, I will request a bus to take us that far - too far for students to walk. But, it was a beautiful day to walk the waterfront.
Once at the Showbox SODO, students were able to see student designed presented and judged like a real life fashion show. The advertisement was done by the college students as well as the marketing, lighting and filming done by college students. We wish we had reserved seats as some students had standing room only.
We were all glad to greet our bus and get off our feet. I do think the experience of exploring career options in Seattle was a huge eye opener to our students and a special thank you again to everyone involved!
Thank you!

Feed back from the IGNITE students:
- I didn’t know the Port of Seattle runs the planes and the trains.
- I liked how she explained about everything; the slideshow was a good visual aid for her presentation.
- Learning about jobs.
- Talking to the front desk receptionist and learning about her job.
- What I liked best was that I learned about what we import and export. I had no idea that much stuff came in and out of Seattle.
- Learning about the Port of Seattle and the job opportunities that I can now share with my students and family.
- What I liked was that the lady that was talking to us was funny and asking questions and keeping us engaged in her presentation.
- I enjoyed how much Seattle does to import and export things, and I liked how she told us about how much money people make through this tough and scary business.
- I learned about how people ship things from other countries to the Port of Seattle.
- Learning about a lot of different places and different types of jobs there are.
- All the true facts, how she told us about the pay, and how all things are imported.
- All the cool things we learned about the jobs on deck.
- I learned how many Xbox games fit into a crate. I learned how many crates fit on a boat. I learned that port workers earn a lot of money, even at entry level.
- That when a cruise ship lands through the Port of Seattle that these ships must buy all their products and supplies in Seattle. This generates more than 2 million in sales for local business every time a ship lands in our port!
- The reason why the piers are at an angle is so that the trains can turn and load up the ships.
